The Return

Post by jaybyrd »

A few weeks ago, the little woman and I went to our first The Return concert. These guys were very good. Our seats were about 10 rows back, so I could see "John's" Ric's pretty well. That was the first time I have seen a tribute band live. It was very easy to believe that we were back in high school at a Beatles' concert.

Isn't it great how a live performance of Beatle music rockets us back to the early 60's. I am very excited about seeing THE FAB FOUR in Fredericton, N.B. on May 12, 2003. I will give you a full report after the concert.

Hi Guys,

Just a thought here......we all seem to love listening to Beatles and Byrds "cover" bands. I totally agree with Peter...about the buzz we get seeing these acts. I played in a Beatles tribute band for years (did the Lennon bits) and the more I played those songs, the more I appreciated them.

My suggestion (and maybe Peter can set up a forum for it) is to have a "Ric Forum" cover band...I know, sounds daft, but hear me out.

With the advent of computer based DAW's, portastudios, etc...wouldn't it be great if there could be some online collaboration happening between some of the posters to the forum - since we all, undoubtedly, seem to be huge fans of this music. Most of us have capabilities of recording wavefiles and uploading/downloading them (most of us have personal webspace from their ISP's)for others to import into the various software sequencing programs...ie Sonar, Cubase, Pro Tools, etc.....Then we could add our own bits, reupload the files and watch it develop.

Anyway, as I said before, just a thought......any takers??? Sort of a Rickenbacker "Rocket Network" as it were. You never know, maybe some amazing stuff might come out of this.

BTW...not sure if this will work but here's a Beatle song I just did on the PC.......now I'm just waiting for my new 370/12 that was ordered Friday to arrive, to give it that "authentic sound".

Steve,

That is a most impressive version of If I Fell! That has always been one of my favorite slow Beatle tunes.

Jaybyrd,

Many thanks for the nice words....one of my favs also. I'm a sucker for nice harmony and the Beatles and Byrds were definitely huge influences on me (albeit they were before my time!)I guess it's true that great music is indeed timeless - my kids are fans of both now.

BTW...noticed on the "General" forum that you've just ordered a 370/12VP Montezuma Brown! Congrats...I'm waiting for the same model in Jetglow. Any particular reason you went with that model?
Cheers,

Steve

Steve,

To me the greatest sounding guitar EVER is the Rick 12 with VP. So, naturally, that is why I chose the 12 string model. I love the color because it reminds me of my favorite autumnglo. It also resembles some of the other great older guitar finishes.

Presently, I own a 1997 fireglo and a 360v64/12 turquoise. Both of them have the old "330" style and I would like to add the "360" to my collection.

Geordie9: Just a terrific rendition of If I Fell, which may be my all time favourite Beatles' tune. The vocals are great, the harmonies spot on and the guitar work is on the money. Please let me know when you have completed "Because."

The Return is a great band! They are opening for us this summer in Cleveland at an event called "Abbey Road On The River". First weekend in August I think. They opened for us a couple times last summer and are not only a great band but terrific guys as well.
We've also worked with "1964-The Tribute" who are friends of mine and just incredible to see and hear. I believe we are going on before them one night there in Cleveland as well. It's a 3-Day event!

Peter,

Thanks for the comments....they're much appreciated. As I mentioned though, it's absolutely screaming out for the Rick 12 string. Playing octaves at the end just didn't cut it.

So you want me to try an EASY one next time eh! THAT would be an accomplishment. I love the almost orchestral harmonies in "Because" and it really sets the tone for Abbey Road....I don't think they could have made their final album any more perfect! So no takers on the "online collaboration" idea? I'd really be curious as to if it could work. And I'm looking forward to your report on "The FAB FOUR"!

Jaybyrd,

I know exactly what you mean regarding the Rick 12. To me, that sound epitomized the basis of most of my musical influences and when you hear the ringing open chords, just does something to you. It is probably the most unique sounding guitar by far - and instantly distinguishable in a mix.

Don,

Do you and your band ever get up to Canada? It'd be nice to be able to pop out and support some of the contributors to the forum. I'm in the Toronto area so if you have any plans in the future, could you put up a posting and let us know. Actually, as a Beatle fanatic, the Cleveland thing sounds great and isn't too bad of a drive from here......so I might just check that out.

I also read your post on the Harrison tribute concert. I can't imagine what it must have been like to be there and to say I'm envious would be an HUGE understatement. Could you perhaps share your views on the evening?

Many thanks,

Steve

I happened to see "Beatlemania" on Broadway back in 1977. I saw the same act (different players) twice lately. Excellent show. I thought it was amazing that they did the "obscure" tunes like; Day Tripper, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Penny Lane, and others. They did false start She's A Woman when "George" couldn't remember which key it was in. "John" had a 325L long scale.
