Thanks Bob, believe it or not, I still have the same set of Ken Smith Compression wound strings that were on the bass when I got it almost 3 years ago! I can't seem to find Chromes in the .095 to .045 gauge set in my area. I guess I'm gonna have to mail order them. I've been tempted to put on the .100 to .045 gauged set, but I see on the package that those Chromes have a higher tension than D'Addario roundwound strings. I'm not sure if that '75 would like that much tension on the neck.

Joey - when I moved from Rotosounds to Chromes on my 4003 I had to tighten the rod nuts a tad, and Rotos are higher tension to begin with. Both string sets were the 45-105.

John, because of the limited selection for flatwound strings that I see in music stores in my area, I sometimes wish my fretless was 4003. Then I wouldn't have to worry about putting the set of .100 to .045 Chromes on it.

As you all know, I use a set of 40-55-75-95 Chromes which match the tension of a typical set of rounds more closely. Highly recommended; I have a set on my '73 4001 with excellent results. Image

Joey...

I wouldn't worry too much. Granted my '77 4001's fretted, but she's been sporting 45-100's since October and the neck hasn't flinched.

Bob are those strings that you are referring to flats or rounds? I've always used roundwound 45-100's on my other 4001 basses and never had a problem.

There's a nice looking 74 jetglo 4001FL on ebay right now, if I had a few extra bucks I'd probably grab it, it's pretty reasonable too at this point, 820.00.

Mine is in at Ric Page, I just asked Mike Parks if he could do something with the dots on the side of the neck, we'll see. I'll report back when I get the word and the bass.

Well I got the news, Mike doesn't do any sort of mods on these which is what I expected so I'll see if I can used to it the way it is. I really didn't want to mod it anyway, he's shipping it out Monday.

Bob, if you don't like it I am in the market for a fretless. Let me know.
