It is a bit of anomaly if it is factory work.

The Grovers appear to be original and the wings look to be real.

Yes, the Grovers are real and period-accurate, but the wings look as though they're merely painted on. Look closer. Doesn't the 'finish' on them appear to be missing in places?

It's got a silk screened TRC on it too. It does look like paint though, did anyone think to ask him?

Is a two-piece neck normal for a very early 4003? I've never seen anything other than a one-piece.

Yes, a two-piece neck is normal for early 4003 basses. The bass has a silk screened TRC instead of a raised-letter one because it's a lefty.

I blew up the picture of the back-side of the headstock and it is clear that the wings are fake. The grain of the maple extends from the light wood right into the dark areas. Also, there is an area below the E tuner where the masking was a bit off and the "walnut" is slightly angled. The chips at the corners are suggestive but not conclusive.
