I never look at the finger board dots anyway and I think they were always like that, I'll check my 72 tomorrow. I think they used an S neck or at least an S fingerboard along with special binding that they aren't making anymore or something like that. If the damn dots weren't there I wouldn't be looking at them, they attract my eyes. My intonation is much better on my upright so far and there's nothing there at all, I would like to replace the binding but hate to mod the bass. I'm going to use it at a gig Sunday, I'll see how it goes there.
OK I put whiteout on the binding which cured the problem for me, I just e-mailed Ric to see if I could buy some blank binding, I doubt it though, but there is no way I'm going to leave those dots there. BTW Dave do you have the vintage selector switch on yours? I do and it does a pretty convincing 4001 tone with the cap in, switch out, I was surprised. All in all I'm very happy with the bass since I set it up, took off the cover and put whiteout on the dots. My bass is a real BB although in a certain light it does look a little greenish. Very pretty bass, they look much better in person than in all the washed out pictures you see.

Yes that system is preferable to me, my 72 is like that and my now long gone early 80's 4001FL was the same. Who's Paul BTW? I never thought of Dale, sounds like a good idea, this bass sounds killer through my SVT by the way, lots of punch and it has a great fretless growl with the Pyramids on it especially when you dig into it.
Incidently I got a lot of compliments on the color today, even the drummer who never says anything commented on it. I don't know why it wasn't a bigger seller, I bet if they were in the stores they would have sold like hotcakes as in person it is a beautiful color.
