I only have this one source but it seems he used a 12 string acoustic in the early days of Rush.

Alex used a rented 360-12 on 'In the End' from the Fly By Night album, this information has been taken from the book, Mereley Players, a RUSH tribute by Robert Telleria, published in 2002

Yup, JH said it probably was an electric. Oh well, at least it was a RIC!
