For my 4003 and 4004Cii I always use the same equilisation on my AMPEG: The mids in neutral position (12hrs), the highs and lows about 3dB plus (13hrs position). I just accept that there is a sound difference as the character of each bass is different, but I do not miss any fundamental sound on both of them. When I played preferentially with pick the neck could be very straight and the stings very low. Now I play with fingers preferentially (use the nail for pick function) and use a bit more of a higher string position and a very little bow down in the neck to prevent the rattle of the strings.
I definitely hit the strings stronger with my fingers and like a little distortion input that way, that sounds more Rick like!
