Old strats

Post by studiotwosession »

I have a '63, refinished but with nearly all original parts (non-original case, tho'.) Anyone know what these are worth these days?

I went over to the Fender Forum. If one has a Mac like me, it's stinks...can't even use it.

Hmm...well I have two Rics plus one on order and that's where my interest is these days. I've had this strat for 21 years now, or over half my life. I'm thinking, with any guitar, if I'm gonna unload it I'll unload it before the economy tanks again.

Any idea what the original finish was? What is it currently? Just out of curiousity.

When I got it it was off white, not sure if it was Olympic or what. The luthier said it had a sunburst underneath which of course does not mean the white was not original but who knows. John Carruthers in LA did the work. He worked for Fender for years, had a column in Gtr. Player magazine, and has done work for all of the biggies. It's Sonic Blue now, and is a hardtail.

A buddy of mine recently sold a 62 for 18K, I'm sure I could'nt get any where near that for the 62 jazzmaster that I have.

The whole thing smells to me like a bubble, people who aren't even players trying to make money on old guitars, not unlike the modern art bubble of the 80s, which of course makes me think of selling mine because if it's a true bubble, one will always be able to buy one of these back for significantly less. I saw a beater '59 that was stripped go for 12K on Ebay but I also smell a lot of fraud in bidding. I'd post a pic, Kevin, but every pic I try to put up on here is said to be too large a file.

A refin usually equates 1/2 of the value of an original one.

Glenn,

About 20 years ago there was a '62 Hardtail refinned Sonic blue at a local store. My brother and I were going to pull our money together and buy it, but it never came to be. It's, the one that got away, that we both wished we could get back. With todays prices it will never be.
If you can, please email the pictures to me. I'd still like to see it.

Thanks,
Kevin
