Coldplay is not really that bad. I can listen to many of their tunes. But one description I heard I thought was pretty right on: "Glum Rock"
I feel a whole lot more like I do now than I did before

Andrew, thank you - Sean, you're welcome. I actually own their 2nd album. For about a week, I thought it was kind of groovy, but after a few listens, I realized what droning, lifeless, and dull music it really was. Then, at the Grammy awards, Chris Martin got up at the podium, and went on about how great it was to be there, and how happy he was to meet Justin Timberlake backstage. That was pretty much the end for me.

Another shining example of contemporary style (actually, style + coldplay = oxymoron) over substance. Oh, and that's Paltrow too.

Brad Pitt got it right....

"Robt., I had a good friend who was adamant about Van Halen's music being bad. He, being a learned musician, just didn't get the "Eddie" style, I suppose. I havn't seen him in years. Be interesting to know if he still feels that way as this was circa 1976 or around their debut."

Actually, I think Eddie Van Halen is a brilliant guitarist . . . unfortunately the band that he's done most of his playing in makes horrendous music, amplified only by the lack of talent of DLR and Hagar. But again, just my opinion. Legions of Van Halen fans would tell me otherwise.

Which I feel is the same thing about Coldplay. I think they make better music than a large number of very highly-regarded artists, and that their music is actually completely "substance" over "style", rather than the other way around. At least, it was before their present album. But once again, my opinion. I'm gonna keep listening to Coldplay, and I'm sure other people will keep listening to Van Halen, or anyone else.

If you were gonna ask me, personally, about incredibly, unbelievably highly overrated musicians, I have one word for you: Clapton.

The well-known graffitti of the '60's might support your theory on Clapton, Bobcat -

"Clapton is God"

I agree on the EVH bit - amazing guitarist, unlistenable band!

I'd say Coldplay are more hype than anything else. Style is one thing they certainly don't have, and the substance is subjective.

I still remember the first time I heard them live, after they were built up as the best new thing and though "You have just got to be s**tting me!"

Again, if you were fortunate to catch any comparable U2 performance at the same time in their career you will see just how far the bar has been lowered...
