On the subject of LK copies......I was looking at getting a 4004Ci project of mine carved ala-LK with a skull and bones theme. So while it is LK influenced it shouldn't cause much of a legal stir.
Odds are I'm just going to go with a non-standard refinish instead.
One other semi-related matter.....if I restore a Ric or modify one massively are there any issues? Example.......I buy a 4004Ci with a badly twisted neck that turns out to not be fixable. I then saw off the body wings, purchase a neck-through neck with a blank headstock then proceed to rebuild my Ci. I decide to make it a 5 string and shape the headstock like a Ric and use my TRC and for p/u's use the most tasteful pair of Barts I can land that covers the string spacing nicely. How upset is the Ric legal department at my project. I take an unusable Ric and resurrect it as something else....similiar but not a Ric (and would never be "passed" as one BTW). Just curious since I am going with a "basket case" 4004Ci shortly and while I hope I can restore it to stock, if I have to do something drastic I'd be interested to know specifics of where the lines are that I shouldn't cross.
I wouldn't see the above example as an issue but at what point does a Ric cease to be a Ric? When does using the TRC or copying body and headstock shapes become a problem?
