Paul...thanks for including my amaturish pics in your photo album and posting the pics on the 4005 thread..Sergio's doubleneck is fantastic and the lower half looks like my first real electric guitar (a 480 in burgandy)...I traded it for a 75 P bass and never looked back but it was a sweet guitar none the less....your photos with your Dad's camera are fantastic and JH should seriously consider hiring you to shoot the pics for the next catalog!! Beautiful work! David
Ahh... that old '70s Nikon FM that my Dad (rest his soul) left me is so indispensible to me. It's kind of like my "third eye" and my gateway to the memories of him.
Thanks, Scott.
Sophie is an '86 4003 Shadow (commonly refered to as "Shadow" though I don't think RIC has an official model name for this.) Production run was from '86-'89 for the 25th anniverssary event of Guitar Center. I emailed Mr. John Hall asking how many were made during those 4 years. He kindly replied "50 or so". That was the number of orders taken.
The neck is narrower than those of current and '70s 4001/4003 basses, but thickness identical to the current ones. I suppose most '80s 4003 basses' necks are like this. (Would anyone please confirm this? )
Also noticed lots of '80s black tailpieces are of the 7-screw type.

---4003 "Shadow"---
This bass is similar to the 4003 model.
Features: Black bound Padouk fingerboard, 9 black dot inlays, black hardware, black old style knobs, black pickguard and truss rod cover, block binding, Jetglo finished body and neck.
(1986-89?) - Introduced
(1989?) - Discontinued
I had a shadow bass in the late 80s and do recall the neck being thinner at the nut compared to my 4001 at the time. Think i payed around 600.00 from Guitar Center for it. i had replaced the black hardware with chrome from a junker ric i had..still got the black bridgepiece laying around here somewhere.
