The sound of my modified 4004L with the toaster high gain and vol vol tone controls ... it is similar to a 4003 ... it feels different and looks different ... but if you closed your eyes it would be hard to tell it apart from a 4003 ...

It is a little different because some of the woods are different and it has a toaster instead of a high gain in the neck ... I thought about leaving a ric humbucker in the neck ... I may experiment with this option ...

But I have to admit the toaster in the neck position looks cool

Thanks for the update. I was wondering how close to a 4003 it would sound with single coils. The next thing I want to know is what the humbuckers sound like split. I wonder if I could make a temporary mod to my 4004C to find out.. hmmmm.

I think John Hall said in a post on alt.guitar.rickenbacker a few years ago that all the leads are there on the humbuckers for hotrodding. I haven't checked the RIC website to see if there is any details identifying the leads on the humbuckers yet though.

You might be able to use push pull pots to split the coils, thereby leaving the control layout the same, and with no added holes. You'd have to check the body cavity depth first though, those pots are pretty deep. Another option would be a rotary switch in place of the tone control.

Erik, I know the feeling. I hope to be a proud owner soon too - 427 days and unfortunately, still counting.

cheers!
