'64 Fender Mustang

Hey guys, I need some help. A good friend of my parents has a '64 Fender Mustang that they have had in its case in storage for over 25 years. It is all-original, olympic white (yellowed with age), and only has one minor ding on it. It hasn't been played in a long time.

I'm not interested in it because I'm a bass player and my limit is currently full anyways. Plus, I'm sure this is a valuable guitar, out of my range.

I'd like to help my parents' friend out with some kind of ballpark estimate on what the guitar is worth. I've been posting here long enough to know that you guys will either have great info or know where to start looking. If it were a Jazz bass, I'd be selling everything I had to get it.

Let me know if anybody has good ideas on how to assess its value. Thanks!

I'll trade you my 2000 Fender Jazz Bass for it. The bass is in perfect shape because I only played it twice. It's too big for me. It comes with the original Fender case, tortoise shell pickguard, and a three color sunburst finish. It's American made and beautiful.

The peak value for the Mustang if it's in mint condition is $750.

I think an original with original case, unused for that long, could bring over $1000.00, but not from a dealer. These have been riding the Strat boom the last few months and have increased in value lately.

Thanks, Paul and Chris... I will pass your thoughts along to my parents' friends. They're really not sure what they have in the guitar, so every little bit helps. I'll suggest that they do some other digging, too. It might be an ebay type idea, since it's such an old and unique specimen - perhaps open it up worldwide and see if there are collectors out there who are interested.

I agree with Paul. It's a guitar, not a bass, right? I either case $900 to $1300. Do a search on ebay, watch for a week and see what they sell for.

Watch this one. This should be a close direct reflection at the amount your guitar will fetch. When you try to compare pricing on eBAY, ignore the asking price and go by the sold price. You can also look at the "completed items" to find out how much similar pieces sold for. In the Blue Book Of Electric Guitars, your guitar is listed for $750 mint.

Yes, it's a Mustang guitar. I can see 6 tuners in the photo they emailed me. It's a white one, like the one in the ebay auction you posted a link to. I was thinking it might be worth more since it is from the first year of production, but maybe not.

What happened to this guitar? Was it sold? If so, how much did it go for?

I don't know. I sent a short email to my parents' friends a while ago summarizing what I had learned here and from my Internet digging, and they said that they had heard it was worth about 1k from somebody else, too, and were considering listing it on ebay. I don't know if they listed it or not.
