Longhorns and Rics

Post by throw_this_away »

Just pulled the trigger on a new blueburst longhorn.

any of you think they sound a bit like a ric? Especially the soloed neck pickup.

Yes, I agree. One of the things that attracted me to the Ric bass was that it had that sweet hollow-body sound from the neck pick-up.

And to be able to blend that with a very nasty treble pick-up grunt makes Ric basses very versatile imo.

I can hear some Rick -like qualities on that clip. At least it sounds great with distortion, roundwounds and picked. Evidence: Golden Earring's "Live" from 1977.

Too bad they got rid of the white tape, that's part of the coolness IMO.
Here's my Jerry jones Longhorn basses:

If I could get one new for $400 or less, I'd do it in a second. But doesn't Jerry Jones charge like $800?

I agree about the neck pickup similarities myself, never thought about it until now! Regarding the price, they can be had for $400 or less. The original '98 Reissues, which still have the taped sides, were every bit as good as the new ones, and usually Ebay for right under 400 depending on the color. And the new Reissues should street for low $400s since the list is $499. My '98 Blueburst was only $149 new, shipped, from Victor Litz music when they blew out the 60 or so they had. Shoulda bought them all!

I got mine for $200 Cdn when Musicstop blew them out . It takes some time to adjust to the closer string spacing and shorter scale but Longhorns are a lot of fun to play and they sound good. Mine is very easy to play and does have a really nice neck.

Do you still have to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod ?

200$ canadian... I mean... I got mine for 50$ and a pack of bubble gum. Always someone who got it cheaper. ;P

Standard price for used reissues on ebay are 300-400 for less desired colors (solids), and I have seen the used bluebursts (like mine) go for more. Blueburst is like fireglo for rics... more desired I think (well, at least for me).

I was thinking JJ but I hear that aside from looks, they are actually a very different beast.

The latest models do have some hardware and pickup improvments, if ****** to somewhat ****** is an improvement. And no tape... thank god, so the price is higher than the past. Still gotta remove the neck to adjust the truss rods, but the bridge is adjustable and the tuner quality has also increased.

List is 599$... bass player seemed to suggest that street price was 400$. This is the first of the new ones that I have seen. They must be trickling out to dealers now.

I got mine NEW for 500$ with a fender soft case... and I got reduced shipping and a new fender hard case for 60$ (it fits perfectly in a fender guitar case).

Great deal or not... a blueburst longhorn has been on my GAS list for a while now, so I could not resist. Now I wait (I need to be verified by paypail before I can pay... arrgh).

I do like the old matching headstocks. Both are so nice, new and old. I am very happy to be getting one.

Make old players chuckle, non=players scratch their head, and young players go WTF and drool.

Cool! My blueburst is a different shade though. A little more like baby blue or a Fen*** Daphne Blue into a Cream color. With matching headstock and white tape. Noticed also that they ditched the original 60s and reissue 90s concentric volume/tone controls in favor of the toggle switch. More practical I'm thinking.

As a ric player I am a big fan of the toggle switch. But the pre CBS in me likes the concentric knobs.
