I'm for classic white. I actually don't like the look of gold guards on montezuma brown. It looks too green. A more copper-like colour would get my vote, but since that's not readily available, I'd stick with the original guards.

I like gold plastic on "unbound" Montezuma Brown guitars but on the bound ones I prefer the white guards and TRC. Therefore, my 330/12 VP has gold and my 370/12 VP has white.
On an older model, where the clear coat has "aged" and the bindings are a "cream" color, I think the gold looks better.

The pearl is cool, don't listen to these people. They are so stodgy !! Do what you want.

I like white the best, though. Maybe the pearl would look better on a solid color like a JetGlo or midnight blue. You've already got the wood pattern going, you don't need the extra texture of the pearl guard.

The gold gives the 381 a Capri feel.
That and some oven knobs and it would be quite styling.

Pearl, but only if you can make a matching truss-rod cover.

Thanks to everyone for their votes and comments. I now have gold guards on my 330MB because of the pic Kevin Kuney sent me of his and I like that. However, I don't really care for the gold on this guitar, but I must admit I think the classic white really does something for it. Now to Ebay with the pearl pickguards. Image

Gold looks great when it is a one piece flat pickguard, especially against a solid color body. IMHO gold two piece pickguards don't look quite as appealing. Please keep that thought in mind since the pictures are not 3-D.

How about the bottom part of the pickguard in white and the top part in pearl?

For the gold or white guard-oven knobs.
For the pearl guard- black vintage knobs.

White - but back-painted on clear plexi with the edges well polished. I just built some for my twelve and my bass and was amazed at how much richer and more elegant they are than the old white plexi originals. In certain light they also have a very subtle, pearly look, even though the paint on their backs is just plain old white. They're also more opaque than the white plastic ones. If you have stock white plexi guards and still want white, but want something much more classy, this is the way to go.

Gold/clear, oven knobs. A bit more Capri-looking.

(This was before I made my "top hat" 5th knobs to go with the oven knobs.)

Here are some clearer pics:

This also shows the second of four different pickguards I've tried. The fourth are the ones I'm going to keep on the 381; I don't have them installed yet...
