Neck joints on 360s

Post by jerrymac »

I have a question - when did RIC change the way the necks are mounted on the 360s??? The originals used to virtually hang off the body, whereas newer ones are mounted a couple of fret into the body. Was this done at the same time the hi-gains were introduced??? Was it done for structural reasons??? Did it have something to do with the new truss rod system??? Thanks

Jerry, I think the first 24-fret neck Rickenbacker 360 was delivered in 1970 as a custom order, but the high-gains pre-dated the neck by about a year or so...The 24-fret neck became standard around 1975(?)---maybe others will know precisely when...

Either way[21 or 24 fret], the joint itself is still your basic mortise and tenon;picture the end of the neck inside the body as a "drawer" in a cabinet, and the body is the "cabinet".

Interesting that a Dovetail joint is not used on a Byrd guitar

Thanks guys. I was looking at 360/12s (in fact I bought one but haven't got it yet), and I noticed how the neck was mounted. I had a 360 with high-gains in the late 70s (bought used), and I didn't remember the neck being like they are now.
