Whoa . . .
Okay, am I the only one who thinks that this bass, complete with mods and everything, is actually VERY COOL?

If I had it, I would pull out the J-pickup and put the hi-gain back in, but I don't think I'd change anything else. It looks really nice!
Also, there's a mapleglo 4001S on eBay that looks incredibly nice:

It would be really cool if someone here got it, because then if they didn't like it or want it later, there would be one available for yours truly to purchase . . . (HINT). Hahaha. Seriously, though, it has gorgeous flamed wings.

That's a really nice "S"! Loads of flame.
Is it my eyes, or does that custom job look a little...lumpy?
It is an interesting mottled finish, just looks poorly done.
And if anyone is curious, a J pup does NOT sound good as a treble pup replacement. My 4001 had one when I got it & it sounded like ****.

Plus five minus five!
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here concerning the Mapleglo 4001S. Take a look at the headstock pic. For whatever reason, the dude's got the A and D strings totally slack. E and G look normal, maybe. Plus, unless I'm wrong, the action looks a little high. I'm thinking with the bass tuned to pitch, you can throw a baseball under those strings. Just a guess.
And the other one with the bowling ball paintjob looks like it's got about 3 gallons of poly on it. Cool color though! I'm just wondering about the S though, and those loose strings. Why else would you keep it like that?

Ahh, play devil's advocate at the risk of getting burned by self! The owner of the S has been in touch with me regarding my assessment of the bass, which was way off the mark. Very good reason for the slack strings, which was for pickguard removal and picture purposes. I realize we all look out for the minute details, for our own good usually. I apologized for jumping the gun. Anyone know where to get "crow" around here at 2 a.m.? I feel the need to eat some!

Just spoke to the guy again. He's been remarkably nice in spite of my mouth! Asked him to hang out since he just signed on tonight. Then I go and pi** him off. Reassured him that we all just like to separate the cream from the ****, having all had great Ebay stories both good and bad to tell. Nonetheless, a beautiful figured body on this one, and is a great player according to the seller.
