Welcome Tom, great post. Good to here from another believer in D'Addario XL-170's.

I litererally have never had a bad string in over 25 years.

Welcome Tom, I like you am a believer in playing the bass instead of storing it. I have a 1968 4000 that is my main gigging bass. I take the '87 4003 along for the ride, but it mostly sits on the stand during the gigs. I just love the thin neck on the '68.
Is everybody ready?

Yeah, the same for me (no rotten apples ever). I have Rickenbacker strings on the 5 string and the play nice as well. I just ordered a set of DAD_EXL220-5 to see what they do. They are different gages than the Ric strings:
Ric 115 105 75 55 45
D'Add 125 95 75 60 40
If anywhere as good as the XLs I will be a happy camper.

The neck profile is where I can't find a comparison to the 4001. Matter of fact I didn't care much or the 4003 necks as a 4 string. But with the 5 string configuration it seems to feel right.

Hi Tom, I am/was one of the organizers for the MARF...we have had initial discussions of having another one in the fall of '06, so please stay tuned to the Confluences thread as Jeff suggested for any updates...we'd love to have you attend.
