Beatles Tribute Bands

Dane: Although I agree with most of your sentiments regarding tribute bands, I couldn't help but notice one detail. You implied that there was something very wrong with the world in the year 1964. From many other posts, it's pretty obvious that you're not very happy with the state of the world today and that tomorrow doesn't look very rosy to you either. I guess that means you're not happy with the state of the world in the past, present, or future. I don't mean to offend, but doesn't that make you a 'nowhere man'?

Well put, Dane. Even though I've been a Beatles fan for 42 years, what really endures is the music. Certainly the charm, wit, and pure charisma was undeniable. But I think there are better ways to remember other than dressing up and pretending to re-create the experience from long ago. It's on a par with Trekies at a Star Trek convention. Trust me. I saw the Beatles play in person, and tribute bands tend only to diminish the real thing, not recreate that experience. To celebrate the music of Beethoven, Mozart, Charlie Parker, Billy Holiday, or Robert Johnson it isn't necessary (or even helpful) to pretend to be those people in order to bring the music to life.

What's exciting is to breathe new life to the songs, and put one's own interpretation into them — now that's what makes it come alive for me.

Thanks, David...of course, these are nothing more than opinions, and lord knows everyone's entitled to their own, but I just don't feel like this cultural equivalent of a dog sniffing his own butt is getting us anywhere...

Randy...absolutely no offense taken, brother...and I wouldn't necessarily object to your characterization. I would like to be a paperback writer, however...if me and my monkey can come to some agreement concerning royalties, that is.

Dane, I saw the Zappa Plays Zappa show, and it was fantastic. And if there is someone who should be out there doing it, it should be someone with the last name Zappa. It was a very loving TRIBUTE, and that is the difference for me, there is a Tribute and an Imitation. That is a fine line.

Steve: I'm envious beyond words...and glad to hear that Dweez is doing right by the old man.

Perhaps they'll wander through my bucolic little village and I'll be able to check them out. I'd hate to have to drive all the way up to Poofter's Froth, Wyoming to see 'em...

Dane: Seriously, you oughta be a writer, if you're not already. I always enjoy reading your posts, no matter how much I may disagree with your politics and world view in general. I learned a long time ago to separate my appreciation for art, talent, or performance from the artist/performer. And no, that doesn't mean I'm making plans to go see Al Gore's movie...

We are kindred spirits in many ways Dane, politics aside mind you. Being a bit of a student of history, I understand the point you made, albeit in passing, about 1964 very well.

Thanks for putting a smile on my face again for the umpteenth time since I joined this forum. You definitely have a knack in that regard.

Just to play around with semantics for a moment, anyone's 'politics' can be disagreed with by anyone else, but that's not the case with one's 'world view'. I'm sure you're reporting your world view accurately, just as I am mine...we can become aware of and acknowledge the differences between the two, but views from different angles will never be identical...

The stage looks different from the balcony than it does from the mosh pit...

Dane I appreciate your views. Don't always agree, but repected. When I went to a Beatles Trib show which was great and all I did feel a bit embarrased with the fake accents and banter ect. I agree with the idea of play the music, but be yourself.
