I'm wondering: were there any famous acts in 50s-60s which had no chart entries or at least no top 10 hits?
Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.

In their prime, the Graham Bond Organization played rhythm & blues with a strong jazzy flavor, emphasizing Bond's demonic organ and gruff vocals. The band arguably would have been better served to feature Bruce as their lead singer -- he is featured surprisingly rarely on their recordings. Nevertheless, their best records were admirably tough British R&B/rock/jazzsoul, and though Bond has sometimes been labeled as a pioneer of jazz-rock, in reality it was much closer to rock than jazz."

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers are probably the most famous in the blues genre Sheena. They did not have any commercial success in terms of singles but they did land an album in the top ten. Although not many paid any attention because that is not what sold records.

Mayall's output has caught some flak from critics for paling next to the real African-American deal, but much of his vintage work -- if weeded out selectively -- is quite strong; especially his legendary 1966 LP with Eric Clapton, which both launched Clapton into stardom and kick-started the blues boom into full gear in England."

I almost added Long John Baldry to this list but he did have one tasteless pop hit with the 1967 single "Let the Heartaches Begin" It somehow reached number one in Britain. Don't ask how because I have no idea why he took off in that direction. He was never able to return to his roots (blues) after that debacle. Following his apparent migration to "pop" he lost his original following.

One more Blues band Sheena. Sorry, that is my forte after all.
"Bluesology" They had a very young Reg Dwight as their keyboard player. They did record a few singles but had no success at all in the charts. They were a great band, however with a huge following. They were often hired to back up touring US blues and gospel singers.
Reg left the band at some point and changed his name to Elton John and the rest as they say is in the history books.

Jerry: Yes, legend has it that Pete Townshend approached Eddie Phillips to join The Who. Eddie had a playing style very much like Townshend. He also made extensive use of feedback and may have been the first guitarist to use a violin bow. I've read that he first tried the bow on his new and highly prized cherry Gibson ES-335. He accidentally marred the finish as he bowed, forever scarring the guitar. Presumably, Phillips stayed with The Creation because he thought they'd be bigger than The Who. If memory serves me, he later worked as a roadie for Led Zeppelin before becoming a London Transport bus driver.
