Noel was of course the bass player in the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

As I heard it, Noel was a guitar player, who switched to bass purely to be accepted in Jimi's band. On "Red House", there is no actual bass guitar on the track, he is playing a low rythm guitar. Sad to see him go.

Yeah, he was a guitar player, I always play Red House the way he played it but on my bass, (quite a stretch) I thought that was what he did, it sounds kind of deep (in tone) to be a guitar. I haven't heard the song for a long time though.

From the "Are You Experienced" CD re issue: (Jimi says) "Noel plays a $5 guitar that he bought...which is held together with bit of sticky tape..." And Noel says: "I actually played a guitar on the original Polydor recording of Red House...there's no bass on the original recording. Hendrix said, 'We're gonna do do a blues in B' and I said show it to me on guitar, because I liked to play along on rhythm to familiarize myself with a sequence. We ended up just recording that."
