Hi John . My favorite bass sound has always been single coil . 4001 , flatwound , palm muted , played with a pick or 4001 roundwound . I have not been able to duplicate that single coil tone on the 4004 . The toasters will be an experiment in my never ending search for tone . I like the 4004 very much comfort wise and for deep finger style playing . Just need to test the waters.

Thanks, Barry!
No...no converting is necessary. That's an '87 4003S. Pretty similar to a '77 4001 in feel and tone(except that she was born without a cap), only my right wrist is happier playing the S.
I would think that converting would be a huge PIA. 4003S models are out there, but not very common.

Play what you love, love what you play!
Barry - thanks for the explanation on the toasters. I guess that's what I like about the 4004 - different and meatier than my pup-modded 4003. Whereas my 4003 (toaster and unwound-6.8k/alnico5 magnets bridge) sounds like how I hear a 4001 on classic recordings (Yes, Genesis, Rush, Wishbone Ash, etc.), the 4004C sounds still like a Rick, with clank and growl, but has the high gain/humbucker sound and capable of deeper heft, if you will.
I really like the body profile of my 4004C - soft angled edges. I also love the neck - I can't imagine a 4001 being slimmer in profile. I'm glad John_L asked the question as I too wondered. My 4004C neck is appreciably thinner (but with the profile you describe) than my 2004 4003.

I can think of three people, Rath, Scott, and Pappas that can vouch for the way toasters sound in a 4004Cii and its anything but thin. Just make sure the pups are at least 5mms away from the strings, 4mm is better if you can manage it. I like the neck on the 4004 too, it's wide but it's sure got a nice backside profile.

Well I can't take credit for the toasters, that would be Mr. Scott(have you seen his fretless with toasters). Really love this bass, I have three other ricks I could play but I just seem to be drawn to this one, definitely a keeper.
