Yup- welcome to the 4004/toasters club, it's definitely a different sound, a little 4001 mixed with a little walnut, a good amp with clarity will let you hear the subtle differences. I usually play with both vols at 11, but rolling off either one gives you some wild variations, soloing the neck toaster gives a nice mellow thumpy sound.

Rolling off the neck toaster a bit and playing fingerstyle near the bridge pickup produces a nice burpy Jaco tone which is quite nice, something virtually inpossible to get on other Ricks (except on toaster equipped 4005s).

A simple answer to the question: late 2006 units and beyond.

Got a few made-up necks ahead, huh? :D Ever have the feeling early 2007 is going to be a time of a lot of orders for 4003 basses?!
