Picture Sleeves

Post by studiotwosession »

While Ringo's music may have lagged behind the others in many ways, I have to say this picture sleeve is a though one to beat. What's more rock 'n roll than Frankie with a Marlboro? I wonder if they had to pay someone for using his likeness:

That PS came in three variations - The flat finish like is shown in the link, plus two glossy ones, black and gray. I believe the flat finish is more obscure.

What's really rare is finding one of the 45's with a blue Apple label.

I think I've only seen a handful of those in my life.

Image
Aside from being a marginal song at best,
the really sad thing about it is that this picture of Ringo is unedited.

It's a good title, though.

Yeah, I've seen the "Can't buy me Love" sleeve sell in the $400-$800 neighborhood. Supposedly they only made a handful of those. I'm missing two of the Capitol released sleeves, one Apple, and a few of the pre-Capitol era sleeves... In the 80s I used to be able to find them in near mint condition for about $8 a piece. Now they're in the $100s...

I am in my home in San Francisco right now so I can't check. When I get back to Boise I will take a look at it.

If I recall, the sleeve for "Can't Buy Me Love" is the same photo that is on the sleeve for "I Want to Hold Your Hand". The originals have Paul holding a cigarette and the later sleeves have airbrushed the cigarette away.

The 1984 release has the cig airbrushed out. The fakes are blurry.

It's also the same photo used on the "I'll Cry Instead" sleeve, but this one has like a red or orange border.
