Rickenbacker Bass Surround Assembly

Post by chrispaul »

Hello -

I may need to purchase the idiot's guide to Rickenbackers, but perhaps, someone could help me.

I'm putting the handrest back on the a 4003 Rick bass and I can't seem to remember if the spring is above or below the handrest when putting it back together.

Could someone walk me through putting a handrest back on the bass. Thanks.

Handrest ? Do you mean pickup cover ?

There is an exploded parts diagram on the RIC website that will help you. There are two styles of cover but I think the 4003 uses the later one exclusively. The early type has short sides and goes above the springs so it does not move when the pickup is adjusted. The newer type has longer sides that anchor near the bottom of the spring and does move during adjustments.

When the 4003 pickup cover looks a lot like a carrying handle for the bass, like mine did for ages, it's not on right.
If it ain't broke, break it, then fix it.
