My 330-12 Is Here

Post by drumbob »

I received the '92 330-12 today that I bought from Chris Pappas and it's just beautiful and plays great. I couldn't be more pleased. What's even better, it seems to stay in tune pretty well, considering the humidity in my basement. I have already spoken to couple of local guitar techs about setting it up. Do you guys recommend RIC strings? McGuinn uses them in .010 guage. so that should work for me just fine, as I use .010s on my other guitars.

The first thing I did was tune it up and play "Tambourine Man" and The Leaves' version of "Hey Joe," both tunes we will be doing in my new band. Now, I'm going to plug it into my compressor and fire up the Hot Rod Deluxe.

My very public thanks to both Chris and Bob Belloff for hipping me to this guitar.

I knew I could find a good RIC right here on this forum.

Congratulations on your acquisition! the Rickenbacker compressed RW 12 string set is an excellent choice for strings.

When you get the chance, post a pic, please. We LOVE pictures.

You're welcome, Bob! I knew you'd like it...looks like it was in a time capsule from '92! I would've kept it if that CW hadn't come up for sale...you can really get a good jangle from it by turning that 5th knob the whole way, clockwise and strumming just ahead of the treble pickup Image

FWIW...I'm on the lookout for a set of low tension flats for my 12 as well, any suggestions?

Chris -

A lot of people are using Thomastik-Infelds since they are one of the lower tension strings out there. Unfortunately, they don't make a flatwound 12 string set. You'd have to piece it together. It tends to be a little expensive.

The good thing is that you can customize the gauges you want. Juststrings.com carries TI in most gauge sizes, and many other brands as well. You could get a six string set, and then six individual strings.

i did the Thomastik-Infelds make up a set bit ...good if you want to some bends.
I ended up going back to the Pyramids, stiffer for sure, but man do
they ring, if you want the "Tambourine Man" sound, i haven't found
anything that beats the Pyramids ...i read somewhere Mr. McGuinn uses them
or used them ?

The only problem with the Pyramids is they're a lot higher tension.

'Mr. Tambourine Man' as well as 'A Hard Days Night' were recorded with RIC factory Maxima made strings. TI's are the closest to Maximas.

The TI's come in the correct gages to make a set very close to Rick's original set.

A generous offer, to be sure, John, but you know what they say:

"Teach a man to shrink and post and he will feed his family for a lifetime."

Or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Hey everybody. I got a digital camera this weekend and of course took a lot of pictures. I have tried every suggestion I've seen on this forum and can't figure out how to get the file size down AND the dimensions. I downloaded the JPEG Wizard like Peter McC suggested but can't figure it out I guess. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? Thanks - J

I use Photoshop, Jason, and there's a "Save for Web" option, which keeps the pictures fairly high quality but shrinks the file size. Maybe JPEG Wizard has something like it?

Well, I give up. Back to the drawing board. Here's a funny pic anyways. Thanks, John, but I don't think it has an option like that.
