Hi Augustus, welcome. There is a difference in the two, the truss rods are not interchangable, I'm not really sure what the difference is though, but I do know that the 4003 necks are stronger than the 4001's and are easier to adjust. The 90's 4003's have hotter pickups, some of the early 90's necks are a little thinner. The early 80's 4003's necks were adjusted under the pick guard at the other end of the neck rather than at the headstock, these had split pick guards, (80 to 84, I think). Maybe someone else that has more experience knows the finer points of the differences between the two. In my opinion, the latest 4003's are the best they've ever made.

The truss rods in 4003's and 4001's are different ... the current 4003 truss rod is very easy to adjust ... the old ones weren't ... If you adjust a 4001 wrong you can pop off the fret board ... ouch ...

Hey Augustus, you don't have to call me Mr. I'm not that old! haha. And yeah Jeff is right, the 4001's were harder to adjust, I twisted a nut right off a 4001 once, I find that a little DW-40 in the nut (nut on the truss rod that is) helps though.
