Melissa, Our formal lounge room has been converted into a permanent jamming room. It has a piano, guitars and amps, a Roland digital drum kit and sometimes a traditional drum kit.
I've actively encouraged both Jeremy (age 10) and Izabella (age 6) to bring their friends over to make some noise. The other kids think it's really cool to visit our "musical" house. I don't push them, but I provide every opportunity for them to explore their own musical tastes and talents.
Like you though, I struggle to get them away from the computer, the TV and the Playstation still.
Excellent idea Darren. When we do the addition to our house, that is exactly what we have planned for my current basement "studio" space. Expand it to a 15' x 25' room and bring in the drum kit. The amps, guitars, pa and recording tools are already there.
Kevin is allowed and encouraged to bring his teammates and buds over to jam as often as they like. I get to hear Smoke on the Water a lot.

Never, ever drool on your surf shirt. It wrecks the solo.
Darren thts what I do with my kids ,is the digital drum kit any good.I was thinking of buying 1 for the younger kid to get him away from the t and marvel figures.
Niall, the Roland TD-3 kit is excellent value for money. I've added a mesh-head snare to the kit, so the whole thing cost me around US$1500.
Kids really can't do much damage to it either. The rubber pads are designed to take a fair whack. The best part is it has a VOLUME KNOB and takes headphones!
I can be drumming away at 2.00am with the rest of the family sleeping a few doors away in ignorant bliss!
Cool.... A formal jamming room is exactly what I need! Although I guess my family room has kind of become that in the last six weeks, as it has been taken over by keyboards, guitars, amps, and sound equipment as my friend Bill and I have been preparing for our big gig that's just 3 days away now!
"Once I've held and played the best, baby, I won't settle for less!"
Oh I know, it feels weird not to be playing it for this gig, but for the songs we will be doing, the fullness of the 330/12 is what really works....
However, if you look between my knees you can see the "R" tailpiece on my 481, which will come out to ROCK on a few kickin' songs that Bill wrote.... My hubby Marc tried to get a couple of pics of me playing it, but he said I was moving around so much that he couldn't get a clear shot, LOL!
My inner rock star gets to go wild, finally, hehe....
The Purpleburst will get its public outdoor airing on Sunday morning and evening for the third annual Fisherman's Picnic waterfront worship service.... Pics to follow!
