Post by ealdrett »

For those seeking a 4005, there is a very nice MG with OHSC on there.
Very lovely.

When did Ric-o-sound start on the 4005's?

How come these 4005's are so much more than the 4001 or 4003's? I actually like the look of the 4003 better.

Yeah-
The sound is great;I've owned a tidy few...
I had a 79 BG that a friend said it played like a steak...
It did look like a Delmonico....
What a tone...

I guess if you time traveled me back to 1979 and I had the option of buying the 4001 or 4005 I would go with the 4001 like the majority of the people at that time. It's so interesting how these "vintage" guitars gain so much value and who would have known back then? If I had known I would have babied my silver and black 4003 and would still have her today.

Interesting, Joe.
I would do the opposite. I've always been a fan of hollowbody basses and would have gotten a 4005.
I didn't know they existed until 1989 and at that time, they were way out of my range since I was still in college. $1200 was a lot for a bass considering I paid $400 for a jazz bass. Since that point I've been a fan of Coronados and Gretches.
Never been interested in getting a 4001 or 4003 until I saw a BlackStar and played it. Again, out of my range since I was in high school and couldn't afford it.
4005 all the way!

Time to post that old pic again... me and my 1964 Gretsch Model 6070 (5 years ago - I got a much better camera now!):

Than post a better pic! Image

Yeah, hollowbodies are great!

One of the many great things about the 4005s is the totally clear access to the end of the fingerboard.

Hey has anyone looked REALLY closely at the photo of the pickups? Dave, is that you as high bidder, please look because it looks a little strange!

It looks like there are 3 pickups there in total... 2 pickups in the bridge position, one sitting right on top of another! Some kind of customization? Makes me wonder what kind of routing or screw holes have been gouged into the body to to that!

There is only one pickup in the bridge position, I can't see what you think you see.

It's two pickups, that's just a cover on the bridge.

Hey Dave...Yes I am the high bidder for now.

Jeff is correct, there are only 2 pick ups. I think that you are confusing the bridge cover plate for a pick up.
