Autumnglo . . .
. . . or is it Walnut? I gotta get them straight by the time I finish the book. Anyway, this could be an interesting eBay auction. No reserve and a three-day auction. Looks in good shape. If I wasn't totally happy with my Monte, I'd . . .

Although there are exceptions, most AutumnGlo 4001s have black pickguards & truss rod covers and seem to mostly come from 1976. Most Walnut 4001s have white pickguards & truss rod covers, and come from any year mid 70s to early 80s.
This one appears to be an exception to the '76 rule, but does follow the 'black plastic' rule.

Peter: I'd say it's AG. The Walnut finishes IMO were the non-burst translucent brown finishes, ala Burgundyglo but with a brown hue. There have been a couple of these Walnut basses on ebay recently.
In the 70's-early 80's, some even used the term 'Walnutglo'. John Williams has a 1969 360/12 with this finish on it, the earliest I've seen.
Walnut as a finish was even more hard to define in the 60's and was a really rare finish in a burst pattern, from a yellowish center to an almost black around the edges. There is a pic of a 360/12 WAL in the Japanese 12-string book.

I have a 1980 360-12 WB in walnut, and it has a light brown sunburst. The Rickenbacker website has a catalog that shows the WAL option that looks more like MB:

I think the finishes vary greatly, as with other colors. Sorry for the poor photography.
