Lars has the right hump there. I don't know when it began, but my 2000 4003S/5 has it.
No nervousness necessary, Alex. My 2003 C64S has the same neck profile that RIC says it will be using for the 4003 and it is ROCK solid. My mid-80's 4003's have even smaller necks and are also solid.
Personally, I don't think it's a "pronounced" hump. It had to be pointed out to me very closely before I even realized it was there. To me, the pickguard looks the same as it has for years, so it doesn't bug me at all. I'd rather have the "S" back than have Rickenbacker expending effort to make said hump less "pronounced".
It's not really the hump itself that jumps out at me. It's the "wrong" looking asthetics of that particular pickguard. As I examine it, it's the hump that is found to be the culprit.
For the record, both styles are still in production while we make the transition. That's why you see no official announcement regarding this "feature".
It should also be noted that the vintage profile hasn't been completely well received; there are many people that liked it as is was and have made mention of that to us. It's a challenge we always seem to face, that when we satisfy one group of people, another group is made unhappy, and the main reason we don't make too many changes even when we know well there are improvements that we could make.
Thanks John. I just got my 75th 4003 officially ordered today (yahoo!), and was figuring that it would have the slimmer neck. By the time you build those, do you think that may not be the case then?
