Dark Cherry 1973 4001?

Post by markbass99 »

I had a feeling of deja vu when I saw the anniversary color because it reminded so much of my 1973 4001, so I attempted to take some pictures that could validate my feelings. After all my bass is supposed to be burgundy, but it's never looked like that to me when I compare it to most of RIC's other example's, especially the mint one that's on ebay right now. Anyway here's some pics with the "LE" sandwiched in between, from now on I'm referring to mine as dark cherry non-metallic, a very rare color from the 70's.

Here's an overlay for a more fairer comparison. Definitely more purple tint in the newer finish, my 33 year old finish does look more like the dark cherry furniture that's in my house. Doesn't really matter though, they're both going to look like jetglo in most of the pictures that are taken.

Mark, I have a 1981 460 BG that is more of a "ripe Bing cherry" than Burgundy, so I bet it's close to yours in color.

Here's some pics that show how difficult it is to photogragh this color, without the labels it would be impossible to tell the differences.

The angle of illumination makes a big diference in how the color appears.

I got a pretty good shot of the headstock and the color showed up a little better from that angle.Image

Definitely some purple in that mix maybe dark indiglo. Did anyone see where that mint 79 4001 true burgundy is at on ebay, $2300 with 6 hours to go, that thing looks like it was painted yesterday.

There was a battle for this between two bidders(not me) and then at the last minute a guy with ebay name "jefferyalaska" came in at the end and got it for $2923, this has got to be a record for a 79 4001.
