My '72 came in the same case, and mine is real, honest. When I bought my brand new 4001 back in 1974 I couldn't afford a RIC case so I went for another type of case, but id did come with the bass and the bass was real. I must say though, that check looks a bit even and large compared to my '72. could just be the photo though...?

Here I am. I don't know what to make of that one, really. That block binding sure doesn't look like the real thing. Maybe someone installed it somewhere along the line. And the bass sure looks as though it has been oversprayed. I have some pics of the Greco 4001 you mention, Scott. It looks very different from the Rick at issue. And yes, that HSC is a 'faker'.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.
