Walnut Sunburst?

Post by brycycle »

after a long ordeal, i'll have ANOTHER 4001 coming through (2 of the deals seemingly fell through - then well, didn't in the end). the listing classified the color as 'walnut sunburst' custom color...is this factory? 1980.

Yes it is. It's either Walnut and Autumnglo. If it's glossy then it's Walnut, if it's a matte finish then it's Autumnglo. I don't think it was "custom color", according to the finish timeline on Mike Parks's website it was a standard finish from '73 through '85. Congrats!

Right Ilan, both Walnut and Autumnglo were standard colors and were, in fact, the same color with different clear coats.

I've stated this before and haven't been shouted down... (satin) AutumnGlo usually have black guards and TRCs, (gloss) Walnut usually have white.

Some people have hypothesized that Walnut is the non-burst, all covering transparent brown and AutumnGlo is the burst version. While Gibson's "Walnut" was definitely all covering, there is no evidence to suggest that Rickenbacker ever had a name for the occasional 'all brown' finishes that pop up form time to time. I would think the ones we have seen are a case of an over eager booth worker attempting an AutumnGlo/Walnut or a custom finish.

This 4005 in the UK is advertised as Walnut. They are asking 2995 GBP.It's abit too battered for that price IMO.

Its a 1981 so that would fit the timeline, but I always thought they only did these in Jetglo,Mapleglo or Fireglo.Someone put me straight please.
While we are on the subject of colours,I've seen some Rics (not basses Image)with a Union Jack design on them (Union Jackglo?).Are these custom jobs or did Rickenbacker do these in the factory?
A 4005 with a Union Jack paint job would be something else! *drool*

Union Jack glo sounds like an Ed Roman special. The 4005 in question appears to be Autumnglo as it has a matte finish. It's possible the flatness of the finish could be attributed to wear, but most likely not as it would have to be uniformly worn all over the bass to look like the above pic.

Leigh,

That's the bass from Mexico. It made it's way from California to Mexico to the UK.
Yes, it's tattered and overpriced. It sold on the Mexican Ebay earlier this year for $1,100 USD. I just missed getting it with a BIN in a matter of several seconds.
Here's what it looked like when it left Mexico and arrived in the UK.
