"1" was not remastered. Just the original recordings put onto CD. Compare the versions of "All You Need Is Love", "Yellow Submarine" and "Eleanor Rigby" on "1" to the actual remastered versions on the new release of "Yellow Submarine", there's a big difference.

Me, are you sure about that ? To my ears most of them - particularly the early songs - sound different to other versions I have on CD, e.g the blue and red albums. Previous posts have referred to the digital re-mastering.

Isn't this album essentially the same as the "The Beatles 20 Greatest Hits", released in 1980 on Capitol?

You're right, Tim, I was just comparing "Can't buy Me Love" to the version on "Hard Days Night", they pulled back on the cymbals quite a bit and cleared it up. Now that I look, it does mention on the CD that it has been digitally remasted. I don't understand why they would use different remasters than the ones they used on "Yellow Submarine" though, because there's still a difference there. Personally, I think they cleaned up the background noise and hiss on "1" and messed with the EQ a bit and in a few cases even fixed mistakes, but I don't think they went through the full process like they did with "Yellow Submarine".

After listening to the cymbal pull back on "Can't Buy Me Love", I'm wondering even more about remastering. They actually changing the song in my opinion...Remastering is cool if it's for cleaning up hiss and better clarity, but they shouldn't alter the mix or feel of the song. Other than a few of the earlier songs, the Beatles recording were already pretty clear, which is why I said I didn't see the need to remaster them earlier, but now they're actually altering the sound of the songs and that's just not right. I think I stand by my no remastering the Beatles statement even more now.

Brian: I think the big difference between "1" and "20 Greatest Hits" is that "20 Greatest Hits" is all of the Beatles # 1 hits on the US charts, while "1" covers both the US and UK charts. All the songs that are on "20 Greatest Hits" are on "1" plus 8 other tracks that were # 1 hits in the UK, but not the US.

If I'm not mistaking, all these songs were the single (45rpm) versions. Weren't some of these a slightly different mix than the album version? This would explain some slight differences other than the remastering changing the mix.

Me, I did say "essentially" the same album. I am aware of the differences between the two albums, however, my point was that it doesn't seem to matter what format the Beatles release songs in, we buy them...by the millions! Thanks for your comments.

The difference between the new Yellow Submarine and 1 is that in YS the songs were remastered and remixed, they did the mixes again for the movie, to have 5.1 sound, after that they made stereo mixes for the LP.
