Which Chorus Pedal for Geddy Lee sound?

Post by anoukane »

I know he uses a 3-way splitter. A clean signal, a RBI overdrive signal and a chorus signal.
I was wondering what a good chorus pedal is which doesn't kill the Ric growl and the overdrive..
Thanks!

Which Geddy tone?

http://www.rusharchives.com/gear/geddy.shtml

When I was playing in a Rush tribute band, a Ric and a Sansamp usually did the trick for me.

Well the tone on a song like The Camera Eye on Moving Pictures for example.

Try a guitar chorus pedal not a bass one. I know he used an MXR guitar chorus on some albums. He used a rack mounted unit for ESL. I don't think it was a chorus, but it imitated it well. Down to FOH sound man I think....

That chorus-like sound on Moving Pictures was some sort of delay/doubler unit the engineer fed Geddy's signal through during post. Can't remember what it was right off the top of my head, but Geddy commented on it in a recent interview in Bass Player.

Yes! I think that was the delay/doubler that Kurt mentioned. Can't remember the name of the thing!

Something like that should work fine. To get the best out of it, you should just run the chorus on the bridge pickup, that means using Rick-O-Sound. That's the way Geddy used to use it. That way the bass end remains clear and deep. Remember to use the slightest touch of chorus to get the best sound. You'll notice on ESL you can barely make out the chorus effect, but it is there on EVERY track. Very subtle and VERY cool!
The chorus effect just brings out more treble clank and growl, if used correctly. I've tried it myself and it is an awesome sound.

Thanks Mark! Image
Pity I sold my Rick-O-Sound kit a month ago. Perhaps I can find an Y stereo cable somewhere..

A Y cable should also work well. You can use it in mono too and the effect should be the same. I've found that some of the low end gets lost. You should be able to compensate with some low end EQ-ing.
