On a voyage for the crown, a brave captain looks over his ship and his impressive crew. His first mate runs up to him, "Captain, there's a pirate ship on the horizon!" "Tell the men to man the guns and bring me my red shirt."
The mate does this and sure enough, the captain wins the day.
Next day, "Captain, there's 2 pirate ships on the horizon!" "Tell the men to man the guns and bring me my red shirt." Just like before, the valiant crew wins the day.
Puzzled by this, the first mate asks, "Captain, you are brave and a capable leader, but I have to ask, why do you wear a red shirt in battle?" "I do this so when/if I'm hit, the men won't see my bleed and lose faith in me." The first mate walks off thinking that the captain is very wise and brave indeed.
3 days out, "Captain, there's 20 pirate ships on the horizon!" "Tell the men to man the guns and bring me my brown pants."
