I've got an Ashdown MAG C115-300 combo. It sounds great and is really loud for a small amp. I've also got an Ashdown ABM 210T cab I use with the combo when we play at larger venues. Together they are pure thunder.

SWR is good bang for the buck, & there is some decent stuff on ebay. I don't know personally about the combos, but the amps & cabs are good.

Have I got an amp for you! (er, him!) I use this Behringer 450 watt setup and the sound is unbelievable, though not as unbelievable as the price! Amp is $(Cdn)400.00 and both cabinets are another $600. Huge power and crystal-clear tone.

Behringer's whole raison-d'etre is to make copies of the top-selling musical gear, cut out unecessarily expensive materials and then sell them for about a quarter of the price of the original. I also use a Behringer Bass V-Amp (clone of a Line6 POD) that sells for $160 and sounds better than the original (which costs > $400)

And now for something completely different - I'm a Trace Elliot guy. One of the 1-15" combos (NOT a Commando) would probably work in that price range, or a 2x10.

I like to run my 4001 & 3000 through a Sunn Coliseum Lead.

A vote for your local boys - Yorkville. Mine sounds great and it works for house practice and outdoor festivals.
