Welcome to the forum Alex. Yes, that is true. People either love 'em or hate 'em. The same was true for Autumnglo back in the 70's and early 80's. Because of that I was able to buy my Autumnglo for less than the going rate for use 4001 of the day. Now, Autumnglo/Walut is up there with Azureglo and Burgandy as a premium color. I got my red for a low BIN on Ebay. Apparently nobody wanted it.

Same here...mine had a very reasonable BIN.

But I've also seen red ones go for quite a bit more on eBay thru regular auctions without a BIN.

It all depends on who's looking, I suppose...

I had a RIC poster hanging up in my college dorm years ago which had a picture of a red/black 4003, and I remember thinking: "I dunno if that would be my first choice of a color, but it would DEFINITELY be my second..."

Now it's my first choice.

Did you get yours recently? I've only been browsing eBay for less than a year, and I've acquired quite a few nice 4001/4003's in that time.

There is nothing wrong with the brown one. It is a walnut in decent shape with the unusual double binding. The Hipshot bridge is a reversible mod, as is the Pickgardian treble surround. I'm not a fan of these, but the ergonomics make sense. Altogether a rather nice rare color combination.

A good deal, I'd say.

Wes: I thought the same thing the first time I saw it. No it is not walut and that is not binding. The finish is a Paul W. creation and the edge was masked back exposing the maple in a narrow stripe along the edge. Cool eh?

Why don't I just end this and make the apparently not-so-obvious statement that the BronzeGlo Abomination is mine and I am the blasphemer in question.

Also: yes, that stripe fools everyone and when I explain it the look on their faces is priceless.

Alan, there was a red 4003 like that but with bridge surround and a Bartolini pup there at our local GC for over a year (was the manager's personal bass) but they had $995 on it. The action was way up in the air. It lasted over 14 months and then it was bought, but I'm not sure for how much. I didn't like the color, but if I could have got it for $164.50, I would have!

Hey a man's ax is a man's ax - even the great Mr. Squire wallpapered his and then it was sanded down. May not be my cup of tea but it is his tool to make music... and so it goes......

The wallpaper thing was pretty wacky but hey, it was the late 60's. As for the sanding, it was not nearly as severe as he says it was. If that much wood had been removed the jack plate would no longer fit and there would be a hole in the back of the bass where the treble pickup route would have been exposed. There is very little wood there as it is let alone taking a third of it away.

As to the BronzeGlo Abomination®, well, it's had quite a life, first being born an ugly duckling and then becoming an even uglier duck and reborn by first being stripped to bare nekkid wood in public on this very website and then put on a pedestal at a hotel meeting room in Santa Ana, not to mention being profusely sweated upon a few nights a month since January.

It's a very limited run, very rare (but I hear there is pallet of them tucked away in the chain link cage near the break area at RIC SA CA USA) and really, I think that most folks around these parts DON'T like it, as it is after all an Abomination® of the highest order, played by someone who is simultaneously a part-time joker and full-time blasphemer.

What I'm trying to say here is it ain't no purpleburst.
