Best Rich bass albums (for Amazon list)?

Hey all,

I am putting together a Listmania list on Amazon, with albums that represent the classis Rick bass sound. Just so I do not forget any, I'd like some suggestions. Here is what I have so far:

Beatles - Sgt Pepper

Yes - Fragile, Yessongs, Yesshows (could list more but there is a limit)
Squire - Fish out of Water, Syndestructible

Rush - Hemishpheres, Farewell to Kings, Fly By Night

Motorhead - Greatest Hits (I am not a fan so others that are better??)

Dead Meadow - Feathers

Okay, what else....which Who albums? Wings? Other Beatles? Early Pink Floyd?

Any released jazz albums?

This is bass only. Maybe somebody else could do a guitar list.

Which Deep Purple albums? Did Roger Glover always use a Rick?

For Motorhead, I'd recommend 'Ace of Spades.'

For Pink Floyd, either 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' or the '1967 Singles Sampler' which is a compilation of their non-album singles from the era.

Maybe Genesis' 'Foxtrot'...

The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour, if only for Baby You're A Rich Man.

Also, Pete Quaife from the Kinks played a RM 1999 on 'The Kink Kontroversy' 'Face to Face' 'Something Else' and 'Village Green Preservation Society.'

(And as it's on my mind...) Fairport Convention's 'Liege and Lief' album is a landmark British folk-rock album that features a Rick bass.

Also, 'In the City' by the Jam

'Murmur' by R.E.M.

I would also add:

Rush - Exit.. Stage Left (Geddy and the Rick at their best, IMO)

Yes - Close To The Edge (I love the tone on 'Siberian Khatru', Awesome!!

You can hear a good Rick tone on Deep Purple's 'Highway Star' off Machine Head (all Ricky I think)....

Any Renaissance up to Azur D'Or, but if left to one or two I'd pick Novella and Scheherezade.

I am especially looking for albums that really show off the Rick sound. I think there is a limit to 25 items on an Amazon Listmania! list, so something has to give.

These are definately great suggestions though and I hope to find some samples to listen to!

Basically, any and all albums where:

1)A rick bass is used
2)The bass is prominent in some way (i.e. not buried in the mix)

But seriously, if I had to ONLY pick albums that REALLY show off the Rick sound . . . here they are:

-Rush: 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Signals
-Yes: The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans, Relayer
-Genesis: Foxtrot, Selling England By the Pound
-Spock's Beard: The Light, Beware of Darkness, V
-The Beatles: Sgt. Peppers, Magical Myster Tour, and Abbey Road (if that is indeed the Ric)

I'm not sure on Bee Gees stuff, but I bet they've got at least one album that has really obvious Ric bass. Ooooh! Transatlantic albums (because that's Pete Trewavas from Marillion).

What is the most typical Rick bass sound? I think these examples show off lots of variations. Sgt. Pepper sound is very far away from Yessounds.

To my ears, the most identifiable sound is, for example, Heart's 'Little Queen' or 'Straight On You'. Has anyone heard?

Actually, Heart's Steve Fossen supposedly used his '58 Precision on those tracks. To my knowledge, the 4001 was only used in Heart during '73-'75, pre fame days. Pretty sure it's only heard briefly on the Dreamboat Annie LP.

10cc's Graham Gouldman used a Rick exclusively on all their '73- '78 albums. Beautiful, fat, stock flatwound sound too! check out The Original Soundtrack, How Dare You, Deceptive Bends LPs.
