I am very impressed with the 4004 basses being made the last few years ... they make good 5 string basses ... the neck is perfect for a slim 5 string bass ... the only thing I don't like about the 4004 basses is the toggle, volume, tone wiring ... but either stacked pots or a volume, volume, tone wiring makes the 4004 an excellent player ...

Great job Jeff. On a totally related note, if anyone knows where a black Laredo is for sale, please email me. I would order one but I've been told that I would be very old when it got shipped out.

My B string sounds great with the toasters that Jeff Scott put in, try a few things before you change them out. You can experiment with pick up height and different strings, don't be afraid to try just a B string from a different brand. I'm currently using S.I.T Silencers, they're a pressure wound string that gives you the feel of flatwounds with the zing of rounds, they're much better than the Daddario Halfrounds that I didn't care for. A five string set(.045-.120) is $24 at Juststrings.com and a four string set is $18. These strings are really nice on my 73 4001's where fret wear is a concern.

Barry ... I was surprised how well the toasters sounded on a 4004 bass ... but I do prefer the Ric humbuckers in the 4004 ... you can preform the modification with a screw driver and a soldering iron ... and it can be changed back easily ... the HBs will be louder and thicker and will distort more ... one thing is the stacked pots in your bass may be 250k ohm pots ... a humbucker should have 500k ohm pots ...
Thanks again Jeff. 3rd time is the charm and the first two were also great. I am looking forward to getting this next week.
Thanks also to Brian Crisman for pushing me to trade one of my Cii/5's for this. I couldn't talk him out of his all black Laredo so we found this bass for the conversion instead.
