Good info Jukka! No matter what it is, it IS a nice sound. Underrated player and group in my eyes.

Lynne indeed was the member of The Move and played guitar and keys but not the bass. On the last album "The Message From The Country" the bass was played by Roy Wood and it has a spectacular bass tone but Roy used a Fender Jazz. Rick Price who the last "proper" bassist with The Move also had a great rumbling sound but he used a Precision. AFAIK nobody in The Move used a Rick bass.

No Wings albums mentioned here. No complete albums recorded with Macca's Rick? How about Ram?

My opinion reflects some of the suggestions already mentioned, ideas here that are worth repeating. My two cents - the albums that got me hooked on the Rick 4001 sound were Yes's 'The Yes Album,' 'Fragile,' and 'Close To The Edge.' Chris Squire's live tone on 'Yessongs' is amazing, too. If the list is limited to 25 albums, you've GOT to have at least one of these Yes albums included. To my ear, 'Siberian Khatru' from CTTE is one of the best-ever studio recordings of the 4001.

Rush is big on the list, too. My personal faves - studio: 'Permanent Waves,' 'Hemispheres,' 'A Farewell To Kings.' live: 'All The World's A Stage' and 'Exit Stage Left.' But honestly, it's hard to lose with any Rush album that Geddy used his Rick on.

Sergio, sorry I'm a bit late getting back; my 72 is a Feb, and yes it's got walnut wings and no skunk. Just to confuse things I once played a Dec 72 that had no skunk, but that may have been a one off. I've never heard Druid's 2nd album; I'll have to try and get hold of it.

Shaun: thanks for the info. Wow! A December '72 4001 with no skunk stripe sure is a first! My very first 4001, which I bought in late '79 and let go in early '86, was a Fireglo 4001 made in December '72. It had a skunk stripe.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Yes, I was rather confused at the time. I've never seen another and to this day I wonder if I imagined it! My favourites are the pre-skunks; I prefer them aesthetically, but I seem to prefer the tone too, certainly based on my experience.

I wholeheartedly agree that 'Siberian Khatru' by Yes is a lush, near perfect Rick tone. Very throaty!
What d'ya mean... the bass is TOO loud!

I wholeheartedly agree with the choice of "Blinded By Vision" by Clatter. Amy Humphrey is an innovative and rock-solid bass player. That CD is always in the top of my list of great bass albums.

Good comments. Gotta get something to Amazon, but still no Wings or solo McCartney stuff? How about The Who albums?

I haven't seen much about Deep Purple, everything from Fireball to Burn was pretty much recorded with a Rick, with some P bass mixed in... Both Roger Glover and Glenn Hughes used them a bunch...

From Machine Head to Burn is more accurate, Fireball was recorded with Fender Mustang.

I like YES's studio version of "And you and I".

How about Starcastle? Gary Strater played Ricks.

Had a nice 4001+Distortion tone. I did a youtube search for "Lady of the Lake" but didnt turn up anything. Does anyone have a soundbyte of this?

Gary was acused of copying Chris - hell, Starcastle was accused of copying Yes - but if you listen to their catalog, Gary was a phenomenal bassist in his own right, as they also wrote very good prog music. R.I.P, dude.

The break in Lady of the Lake has a very powerful bass part that is of such beauty - it is just awesome. Lady of the Lake is here to hear:

Sounds thin though.....
