Need info on Ampeg V-40 Combo

Post by johnallg »

I just saw a 74 (IIRC) Ampeg V-40 combo at our local GC. It looked prety clean, no torn tolex, but the front grill was water stained and loose. Speakers looked aluminium coned and were 10", I believe.

I couldn't find specs by googling, and Harmony Central had no listings. Anyone here know any info on this combo? And what would one be worth?

They were like a half power VT-22, had two 7027A's instead of four which are hot rodded 6L6's and are made again, they can withstand the plate voltage of an Ampeg which is higher than other heads. They're nice sounding amps, Mick Taylor used them in The stones. The original speakers shouldn't have been silver coned, were probably magnavox like the SVT's. I'd snap it up if it works good, the grille cloth is available at Fliptops. They're probably about 50 loud Ampeg watts. VT-22's were 100 watts and rivaled any Marshall as far as the ear bleed factor goes.

Ampegs have always been good, sturdy amps but very lacking in the character department in my experience. Having played a V-4 and VT-22 extensively and a few hours with a V-40, these amps all have that "Ampeg" sound. It seems no matter what guitar I put into them, it came out "Ampeg." I suppose that's not a bad thing if that's the sound you dig, but to me they just never had any real highlights about them. Just very generic sounding. I played them because they were "around" at the time.

Thanks to both for the input - GC will need to come down in price to make it a deal.. usual pricing tactics (at least 150% of what things should be - worse if they think they have a really vintage guitar). It looked portable...
