Are you talking about the solo after the bridge and before the outro? It's been awhile since I tried playing it, but I don't remember it being super technical (otherwise I couldn't play it).
The two things that may be confusing you a bit are that I think he uses a touch of echo on the repeated pattern that plays over the part where the rhythm guitar breaks to the Bm7 (?) chord and if I remember correctly he's actually playing octaves on the plain strings throughout the climbing portion that goes back into the vocals. You kind of have to strum three strings but mute the middle string between the octave notes with your fretting hand.
This is all from memory. Now I'm going to have to go plug in some gear and the CD to make sure that I didn't lie to you. I haven't played that song on the guitar for years.
Do you know of an easy way to write down tab? I might be able to put most of it down for you if you can tell me how to do it on a computer.

It's been so long since I heard the song that I completely forgot that the octave part was also played over the intro.
Start where Kenny says, and since it's all played with this finger spacing on the first and third strings you have to slide between all the notes. Mute the second string and strum/pick across all three.
Going from the 14th with the index finger slide it up to the 16th, down to the 14th, down to the 12th, to the 11th, the 9th, the the 7th, then the 2nd. I think that's all of them.

Huge coincidence. I also just decided to try and tackle this song. But I’d be doing Petty’s part and my lead guitar player would do Campbell’s.
I didn’t notice or remember either that Mike plays something over the Intro (at least not in the live LP version that I’m going off of). I’ll have to give a listen again.
If it’s octaves over the G and E string (with the B string muted) I wouldn’t be surprised. That’s how American Girl starts also.
