Oiling tuners

On a ricky with those closed back grovers, can i remove the backs and oil the tuners if they are stiff?

I had one that fell apart a few years ago and if I remember correctly once they are apart there is no way to hold them together. The gears are probably worn, but you can drop oil through the sides opposite where the key comes out, that has never worked for me in the past though on stiff tuners

so....I cant take them apart? they are permenantly sealed?

I think so, it's been a while though, but you can find them here and there if you look. kind of expensive though.

I had Grovers on my 4001 and the backs came off a little bit. I took the tuners off the bass and clamped them down and they seem to hold so far. But actually they were kind of sloppy so I replaced them with Hipshot Ultralights, I have them on all my basses except the '62 Jazz. Highly recommended.

These tuners are quite easy to repair after they split open. Take them off, reassemble, then use a center punch, even a big old nail, and a hammer to swedge the center of the four pins in the corner. That's what Grover failed to do properly in the first place.
