That Cii/5 is the one I traded to Brian Crisman for a Laredo that Jeff later did a 4-2-5 for me.

It plays well if you are OK with fatter necks. I still have my first Cii/5 but find that I play my 4-2-5's more. Jeff has done 3 for me.

I wish Rickenbacker hadn't gone dark on the Cii/5.

Even with it's pickup issue, I'd trade a 4004 for a 4004Cii5 any day just to have for when the pickup issue is resolved so I could retro fit it. Then I'd make a 10 string out of it. It's probably on Ebay because of the string response issues, otherwise he might have offered it here first.

I only recently found out. Along with all of the cool stuff that goes on around here we have a few occasional disappointments. I will miss Brian's contributions here.

I have no real interest in a five-string bass anymore. Having owned two at one time, and selling them both. But a C64S, a 4003MG, and a 4004 Cheyenne would be very nice. A million dollars would be too!!!

Brian's only selling it because he prefers four strings. He said the pickup "problem" was not a big issue.

Brian can be found at the Rickenbacker section of the Dudepit. His explanation for selling the bass:

it's not that I don't like it. I actually like it quite a bit......I just like my BEAD 4004Ci a tad more. The extra five high notes I get on the Cii/5 aren't enough of an advantage over the "fits like a glove" Ci. I'd like it to sell to free up some toy money, but I certainly will not be upset if it doesn't go.

Yea, I miss Brian too, he was a good advocate for the 4004 basses that I've just recently discovered. I think a Cii/5 would make a good six string bass conversion, It's got the same nut size that Carvin uses on their sixers(2"), you would just have to figure out how to do the bridge. It might be possible to take six hipshot saddles and mount them on a custom baseplate with no dividers between them and come out with the right spacing. This is what I'm doing on the five string conversions and the spacing is perfect. Who's going to be the first to make a 4004Cii/6...Ted...Jeff...Dane...?

What would you want to buy NEW from Rickenbacker?

Nothing, absolutely nothing.

There are some "ifs" though. If I could buy a 4001C64 with a right-side-up headstock in AFG I would. Or a Cii with a quilted top and the neck pickup spaced away from the neck.

I am not complaining. I'm sure some day a right side up headstock will be available on the C64, and I'll find a pre-owned C64 quilted in Trans Red.
