The earliest 1964 12 string.......

Post by jwilli »

Anybody have an idea of the earliest 1964 Rickenbacker 12 string? Mine/David McLaughlin's is DE XXX. Help. The earliest model 1993 on Bjorn's site is a DG. I know Greg Fritz has an early one, anyone know the serial number?

Gerry Marsden's was March 1964. Lennon's 325/12 was Feb. '64....There may have been others, but I dunno prior to Feb. '64 other than the 1st three in 1963.

Dave Gregory, formerly of XTC, has a 1993, DG 952. According to his website, it was in pretty bad shape when he originally got it. In fact, he was going to pass on it until he looked at the s/n: his initials and date of birth.

Graham, I wish I knew more about that 12 string. Isn't that Richard Thompson? Any clearer pics?

Sorry John, It's the only one I have. I always thought it was fake, until I saw yours. It could be genuine?

My .02 on this guitar is that Rickenbacker didn't do the mod to this 12-string; if they did it certainly wouldn't have a Gibson-shaped 12-string peghead on it. Probably broken at one point and repaired to the way it's seen in the pic.

I have read that Richard Thompson thought that John Birch may have made the replacement neck for that 360/12 in the pic. He won't say much on his web site about it, though.
