I am not an expert on pots ... but I do know there is audio and linear taper and 250k ohm and 500k ohm are common ... less common are 1000 range and 300 range ... for 4004 basses I like to use carvin 500k ohm pots and for 4003 basses I like the Rickenbacker 250k ohm pots although I am sure Ric doesn't manufacture pots but rather they purchase them ... somebody recently asked what was the best tone .047 capacitors they ran 3 different ones by me and I told him I had used all 3 and I can't hear the difference ...

I have never worked on a 3001 or even seen one in person ... I looked at the schematic on the Ric page and I really don't quite understand the wiring ... I am not sure what the purpose of all 3 controls is on that bass ... is it 2 volumes or 2 tones?

Oh sorry - I though you have or had one! Image

From what I've read, and the little electronics I had in physics class long ago, I think it's a volume and 2 tones - a high cut and a low cut.

Looks like an interesting cicuit...

3001's are wired volume, bass and treble. Every 3001 and 3000 for that matter,I've ever seen had components in them that weren't in the schematic.

So they are boosts rather than cuts, and bass-treble rather than the other way? Image Thought I might have had something backwards!

Thanks for the info Dane.

they have to be cuts ... you can't boost without a preamp ... I had a Dillion wired with one volume and 2 tones passive ... it didn't quite work one of the tone controls did nothing ... If I had a 3000 or 3001 I would put in a 2nd pickup and wire it vvt

One tone control works as a high pass filter, the other as a low pass.
