A little 4001 fun

Using thicker pickguard material wont help at all. The bottom surface of the guard is still be in the same place regardless of how thick it is. This would only work if you could remove some of the material around the pickup mounting area under the guard, placing it higher inside the guard. You could also raise the guard with pickup grommets like RIC did in the 50's. Putting the pickups on top of body would make the bass look more like a Lemmy, which is cool since you already have a 4002.

Without a guard it wouldnt even have a resemblance to a 4002 anymore, so you might as well make something else and take the pickup config of a 4004 LK.

But I would relieve the underside of the guard around the pickups slightly to allow them them to sit higher.
