BB TRIPLETS!

Post by jingle_jangle »

Sort of a mini-confluence on my back deck...

Here's a BB4003FL, waiting for some cosmetic work (to be photographed and covered later!), Bob Singer's BB700C (which will receive a repair to the top and a partial refinish), and my own BB325/12.

What a great group they make, and a nice cross-section of unique and rare Rickenbacker guitars!

Bob is about as nuts about BB as I am...he has asked me to build a 700C/12 to match this Comstock 6 (the former Japanese show guitar), and I'm also refinishing a 4001 for him in BB. Both these projects will commence a-buildin' mid-2007.

Great group shot Paul - three uncommon models in a very special finish!

I won't claim to be a big fan of Blueboy, but nonetheless those three look really nice together! Image

The missing link in those pics is that the 4003FL does not have a gold pickguard.

Yes, I think a gold guard would be in the cards for that bass, too...it never occurred to me until I saw the three of them together...when I finish these and the additional two, I think I'll do a 5-guitar/bass group shot...

Don't shoot me for saying this but....

They all look like toys! Sorry, I just don't like BB at all. I just think it looks silly on such beautiful guitars. Ok, it doesn't make it very difficult to miss, but the colour is just too soft and 'toddler like' for my eyes.

I do apologise for being contraversial, but this is my view...

Now that you say it, Will... you're not alone, but i more often than not keep my opinion to myself, especially about somebody's job - i'm thinking: "They've invested time, money, effort, and spirit in their creation, and i never made anything of that kind - who am i to criticize?!". The guitars are great. The finish - not so sure, just not my cup of tea. I'm just too much a fan of natural-looking finishes, or too "conservative", if you like.

Of course you're entitled to your opinions.

I wonder if you guys would feel the same about a Sonic Blue Strat? Or is it just Ricks that are made of wood?

Should all instruments be a transparent color, in order to let the wood grain pattern show through, or a burst?

Sheena, I seem to recall that you like green...is this only transparent or burst greens, or would a Cadillac Green Gretsch be the sort of color you like, too?

The bass looks SO much more green than the other two, and I don't think it's just the picture either. Is it gonna get a refin too, Paul?

Good call, John! But by itself it doesn't look as green. It's in my shop for work other than a refin.
