Sheena, I understand that you wouldn't like to critisize in case you offend people, but I'd rather be open and honest with my opinions, and I apologise if they do offend certain people, but I'm sure that those who are would be grown up and mature enough to accept my comments and my views, move on and hopefully get on with what they want to do. Maybe my liking of BB might be improved slightly with a BBGB (blue boy gold burst) with desert gold inside and BB burst??? Maybe that's an idea for you seeing as BB seems to look slightly better and more striking with gold pickguards.

Will, at risk of offending you...regarding BB fading to desert gold in the center...
UGH.

Will: Hmmm. Yeah. But in case people are offended, i take it that was my fault. And there are, in fact, two ways not to lie: a) express the opinion as is; b) remain silent. I often just chose the second. And as far as your suggestion about gold inside is concerned... i'd better remain silent.
Albeit the combination of gold and cyan ((?) greenish blue, paler than turquoise and darker than greenish BB) is considered to be cool. Not so sure how it would look on guitars, especially in the color model you've described.

I will weigh in here on the BB finish by saying I've never been taken by it. Just not my shade. Has nothing to do with wood grain showing (though that for me is a very likable thing) or a color being solid - coral, or even a salmon, would be really something on a 4003, IMO, and JetGlo is growing on my, and Burgandy is beautiful, too.
I have to admit when I saw Mark Gilbert's 4004BB 4-2-5 conversion on the other thread, my first reaction was it reminded me exactly of the color blue I painted the bedroom when my child was born. And then I saw Will's comment and smiled.
EVERYONE is entitled to their likes and dislikes, and mine vary from others here, and I'm sure many think MapleGlo is boring whereas I really like a beautiful piece of maple graining. It should not offend when someone expresses a difference, because it does not invalidate your opinion or liking. And it makes more of the colors/models you like available to you if some others don't like them!
Viva la difference!
And congrats on the BBs.

For the most part, I agree with the "vive la difference" on any make or model or color available on ANY guitar - somebody 'out there' will like/buy them for whatever reasons.
I'm pretty much a traditionalist, at least in terms of the guitar design "fitting" the color(s) I like. Or maybe I should say the color "fitting" the design... There sure are a lot of combinations that I wouldn't go for at all but, again, it depends on what color and what guitar.
Since Paul mentioned BB Rics vs. Sonic Blue Fenders... I'd take a SB Fender of any model and would love it - used to own a Sonic (or Daphne) Blue Jazzmaster (a '63). For that type color on a Ric, I could only stand it on a solid body like a 660 or a 4003 - it just looks "wrong" to me on any 300 series guitars.
Same goes for Sea Green. I've got a surf green Strat (with matching headstock) that's (IMO) simply beautiful but the ony Ric's in that color that I'd think twice about would be the 660 or 4003.
Same goes for a lot of these other COY's (and even some standard colors). DG? TQ? BlueBurst? White? Only on those two Ric solid bodies, for me. And those colors would still take a backseat to FG, JG, and MG.
It's all in what we like (and can actually get) isn't it? And, in terms of Rics, it's not like a lot of stores have a big variety in stock at any given time, so it's either a matter of "take what you can get right now" or wait.
When I got my 360/12v64 last year I was literally going out that night to buy a (local) new 360/12 that was "PinkGlo" - didn't particularly like that color, but I want a Ric 12 so bad that I would've taken it and been happy. Really wanted a c63, but didn't want to wait - or the extra expense. I just lucked into the v64 and snapped it up. But if that v64 had been JG (or that white on shown here today), I would've bought the new one even though I much prefer the v64/c63 design.
That kind of design, to me, "demands" a FG finish, and nothing else would do. So, to me, it's like that.
Want to talk abominations? I hope Gibson only made one of the "Gekko" Les Pauls - I mean, somewhere on God's gray Earth there *has* to be at least one person who likes that finish enough to buy it. If they made 10,000 of them, they might have a hard time selling them all.

Some people are just naturally sensitive to issues of shape and color; others acquire them through a lifetime of observation with eyes wide open; still others actually go to school to sharpen their visual/mental skills with regard to this.
Still others have no empathy for this; have no time for this; never think about it so they go for "safe" choices in painting their houses, in what color car they pick, or any number of other choices they make when it's up to them to select something which is a major part of their visual environment and requires a conscious choice and investment.
I think it's safe to say that on this Forum, we have a majority of people who consider this to be an issue of some importance, and who make conscious choices which express their preferences in color, shape, and sound.
Visual acuity will vary according to the factors which I mention above, and I'm sure, other variables also enter into it. But it's a pleasure to spend time with people whose consciousness has been raised and who are willing to share their views without prejudice.

Paul, I was only half serious about BB and gold, I do have some taste. Haha I like the way you kinda took the p*ss lol.
But yeah, getting back to the point, I don't like BB as a colour. As for the issue of wood grain showing, Fender seem to do well without the bare wood showing on their Strats which I'm fine with cos I don't really see the beauty of 3 blatantly different pieces of wood glued together and besides, the wood grain on the wood ain't always pretty. Ricks, however, seem to have pretty nice wood and it's nice to look at. I'm not quite sure of the tastfulness if flamed and quilted wood like I've seen on some Ricks (mostly on CWs and some MGs) but I don't think it's the end of the world if they do get painted over, after all, what you can't see can't always hurt you. But, these are only my opinions and what'll cause me to projectile vomit might make someone else just want to cuddle it and give it a big big kiss. Like has been said many many times and WILL be said again, everybody's different.
More of my £0.02

"Jetglo is growing on your what, John?"
Growing on my typo - what's good to remove it?!
"Apply Scratch-X and Zymol liberally, John. It may not get rid of it but it will be nice and shiny, whatever it is!!"
Words to live by!
A JetGlo bass with CB, chrome hardware, and a white TRC/PG would look really sharp - to me. Still not sure about full width MOPs though....

What I'm a fan of: well, the above pic for one.
What I'm not a fan of: no one cares but me.
We all have different tastes in everything, & no one is more right than another.
Personally, BB is one of my least favorite colors, but it's probably not easy to get laid on to a perfectly even tone.
A job well done is a work of art regardless of one's color preferences.

I need to clarify--I did not paint any of those three guitars that I posted. They are all factory jobs. I just felt lucky to have 'em all in the same place at the same time.
I will be refinishing the 700C. And I'll be building a 700C/12 to match it, for the owner.
And, of course, I'd love to do a BB anytime someone needs it...

I go back and forth on the Blue Boy finish. It definitely isn't one of my favorites. I don't think the gold with it is a very good contrast, however, the simplicity of the blue with the white pickguard on the 4003 is a little elegant. I could see myself in a moment of weakness convincing myself to buy a used 4003 in blue boy...maybe. Probably not.
See what I mean? Back and forth I go.
